A new train tour has been launched to explore some of the most beautiful locations in the Coolest Place on the Planet.
Guests on the two-day tour leave Dublin destined for Donegal – taking a whistlestop tour of Belfast and Derry along the way.
The tour includes luxury train travel from Dublin Connolly Station to Belfast, followed by a picturesque ride along the North Atlantic Coast from Coleraine to Derry City. The ultimate destination is Donegal for a deluxe two-night break at the luxury Harvey’s Point Hotel.
But… how do travellers on the Railtours Ireland trip get across the border without any trains?
The ‘train tour’ must go off the rails in order to reach the Hills of Donegal, so guests have to board a bus!
Day three of the excursion explores natural delights of Donegal’s coastline such as Slieve League cliffs on the Wild Atlantic Way.
Again, getting to these tourist hotspots must be a bit tricky without any tracks… or trains.
Private bus transfers are required for travelling across the county which has been without rail transport for many years. They join up to the tracks at Sligo Town once more to return to Connolly Station in Dublin.
Tourists signing up to this €899pps ‘Hills of Donegal’ tour may be getting a wonderful experience of the northern counties, but there’s one crucial factor missing in Donegal they’ll want to note.
Railways came to a close in Donegal in 1959, but apart from the novelty Fintown 3km journey, we haven’t had a passenger train here in decades.
