Greencastle woman Roma McLaughlin has been named on the Republic of Ireland Women’s National Team for a friendly against Iceland next month.
McLaughlin has been selected on a 19-woman squad by Head Coach Colin Bell for the clash with Iceland at Taillight Stadium on June 8th.
The game is to begin preparations for the Girls in Green’s 2019 Women’s World Cup qualification campaign which starts with a game against Northern Ireland in September.
McLaughlin played for the seniors at the Cyprus Cup earlier this year and was involved with the Irish Under-19s at the Elite qualifiers in Limerick.
“The next two internationals against Iceland and Scotland in July will be crucial in our preparations for the start of the World Cup qualifying campaign,” Bell said.
“No single place in the squad is guaranteed and I want to assess as many options as possible ahead of the start of the qualification campaign. It will be a difficult game as Iceland have qualified for the European Championships but I want to see us to continue to build momentum towards September.”
McLaughlin had played for Peamount United in the Women’s National League, but this year moved to Shelbourne. Having hit two goals in a recent 5-1 win over Galway, McLaughlin was back on the mark on Saturday as she netted one of the Reds’ goals in a 4-2 win over Cork City at Bishopstown.
