Councillor Patrick Mc Gowan has called on the Minister for Transport Shane Ross to reclassify public roads in Donegal.
The Councillor raised the issue at the previous Roads and Transportation Strategic Policy Committee Meeting held on the 20th of April.
Roads serving the border area were of primary importance such as the Ballybofey road to the Northern Ireland border at Doneyloop/Clady. As well as the Castlefinn to Convoy road via the R236.
These “Are extremely busy roads and are very important to the whole County for economic reasons as well as everyday cross-border traffic,” said Mc Gowan. When surveyed in the past these roads had much more traffic than most other regional roads in the county.
Currently these routes are classified as local roads, however by classifying them as regional roads they would be allocated more funding by the county council, the reclassification was long overdue according to Mc Gowan. “I have made several motions to the council and now I am calling on the Department and Minister not to delay and to grant the request as presented,” said Mc Gowan.
