Fears that the problematic roadworks in the Kiltoy area of Letterkenny won’t be completed in time for the 2017 Donegal International Rally have been allayed.
Donegal County Council Engineer Charlie Cannon informed this month’s meeting of the Letterkenny Municipal District that the works would be completed in early June.
Councillor Liam Blaney said that there had been indications given that the works wouldn’t be finished by the time the rally starts.
The Donegal International Rally attracts thousands of visitors to Donegal with the event’s base in Letterkenny and the weekend is generally the busiest for traffic in the county.
This year, the Rally takes place from June 16-18.
The works at Kiltoy have left motorists frustrated on an ongoing basis to the gridlock.
Mr Cannon assured Councillor Blaney that the works would be finished ‘on the first week in June’.
He added: “The contractor was there to work for three long weekends there to make sure that the project will be finished by that time.”
In response to a query from Councillor Ciaran Brogan on the reason for the delay in completion, Mr Cannon said: “The contractor hit a lot of rock at a stage, there were then issues with Irish Water and there are main ESB and Eircom services there too and they are servicing a lot of places. It was a combination of everything really.”
