Clinical Cloughaneely claim the points in entertaining encounter
A ruthless final quarter from Cloughaneely seen them claim two precious points in the opening fixture of the Intermediate Championship round robin Group A. In truth, the possession and attacking stats will probably show the tie being an even encounter, however Cloughaneely’s fitness and spread of scorers were ultimately the difference in this evening’s game.
Played in glorious conditions, the fixture had a real championship feel and both teams started at blistering pace but were guilty of coughing up possession quite easily as they tried to punch holes in each other’s defence. The first score arrived on 7 minutes, Seami Nanny Friel splitting the posts with a beauty of a free from 50m. Cloughaneely responded with a free from Denis Boyle who was well marshalled by young James Gallagher over the course of the hour. Boyle was probably fortunate to stay on the field as his rather brash foul on Niall Carr went unpunished by ref Connie Doherty, despite Boyle already being on a yellow card. Oisin Shiels carved open the Cloughaneely defence to give Fanad a slender advantage only for the Falacarragh outfit to completely take control, popping over some impressive scores with Paul Sweeney, Mark Harley, Martin McGuire, Boyle again and Kevin Mulhern to give them a 6 point lead. Seami Nanny Friel closed out the half with a pointed free to leave four points between the sides. Fanad were left to rue some very poor wides in the first half and almost got in for a couple of half goal chances as Michael Sweeney’s efforts were both intercepted before James Gallagher and Eoghan Carr could get their hands on the ball.
HT:
Cloughaneely 0-7
Gaeil Fhánada 0-3
Fanad knew they needed a reaction and that’s what they got. Michael Sweeney went on a canter up the right wing and his effort for a point bounced off the post and into the grateful arms of Eoghan Carr who made no mistake, beating Shaun McClafferty from close range. Mulhern and Friel traded frees to leave the minimum between the sides before the impressive Darren McGeever struck a peach of a goal after excellent build up play involving Declan McGarvey and Aidan Doohan. Friel hit three in a row, one from play and two from frees to leave the minimum between the sides again but Cloughaneely’s fitness started to shine through and they outscored Fanad by 7 points to one in the final quarter to put some gloss on the scoreline. What was most impressive for the Falcarragh contingent is how they mercilessly punished poor play from Fanad in quick and ruthless fashion. Ryan McGonigle and Shaun McElwaine were introduced for Fanad and McGonigle did make a big impact. Seami Coshia Friel and Paddy Carr also entered the fray with 10 minutes remaining and seen plenty ball but Fanad found it hard to break down a well disciplined Cloughaneely defence. Fanad almost hit two goals in the space of five minutes, firstly Eoghan Carr’s effort for a point ricocheted off the crossbar while Sweeney had an effort somehow cleared off the line by Ciaran McFadden after Aidy Heraghty went on a bursting sojourn up the field and indeed could have had a goal for himself only for some fine defending from Mark Harley and Cian McFadden.
Overall, Cloughaneely’s spread of scoring ability won them the game while they also punished Fanad in an impressive fashion. Cloughaneely had scorers from number 7 to 16 while Fanad relied heavily on Seami Nanny Friel from placed balls. Jonny Friel was also appearing to be having a quiet game but it was only when he was withdrawn that the tenacious Declan McGarvey really got some freedom and was involved in three scores as the game closed out. Jonny is one of those underappreciated players that works hard without receiving the recognition for doing so. Outside the scoreline, the teams were evenly matched and possession stats would most likely back that up.This led to an entertaining encounter played in a hard hitting but fair fashion.

Under 12 Boys
Our U12 boys played St Eunan’s in Traigh a Locha last Wednesday night. The boys put in an excellent display and just came up short in both matches. Most of the Fanad boys will have felt they didn’t do themselves justice in the previous couple of games but this week they were back to close to their best when pushing a strong St. Eunan’s team right to the final whistle. There were some brilliant passages of play put together and some great defending between the two games from Ciaran Sweeney, Jamie McAteer, Danny McAteer and Eoghan Logue.
The boys will be looking forward to their trip to Gweedore this week with confidence now.
Minor County Ladies
Well done to Gaels girls Caoimhe Walsh and Orlaigh Carr after their victory with Donegal minor ladies over Fermanagh in Tirconaill Park. Both girls played and performed very well in a 1-12 to 0-7 victory for Donegal. Great achievement for both girls.
Under 12 Girls
Another super performance from U12s last Tuesday as they finished off their season undefeated with a victory over local rivals Milford. It was a superb team performance with excellent displays from Jessica Coll, Emma Hunter & Rachel Friel
Scoreline: Milford 0:00 v Gaeil Fhanada 2:11.
The U12s now go to blitz days. No dates set yet. We also wish Aideen Friel a speedy recovery from injury.
