A Carrigart man was found to be in possession of drugs with a combined street value of €7,480 after drawing the attention of Gardaí as he disembarked a bus from Dublin in Letterkenny.
Garda Stephen Moyles was on plain clothes duty on March 23, 2016 at Letterkenny Bus Station.
Information had been received that drugs were being transported to Letterkenny via the bus.
Garda Moyles’ colleagues were dealing with another individual when he observed Robert Deehan acting in a suspicious manner, today’s sitting of Letterkenny District Court was told.
Garda Moyles found Mr Deehan (41) of 179 Church Road, Carrigart in possession of a Sainsbury’s shopping bag containing nine ounces of cannabis herb and one ounce of MDMA
Mr Deehan was subsequently arrested and detained at Letterkenny Garda Station.
A subsequent search of Mr Deehan’s home in Carrigant found just over an ounce and-a-half of cannabis, weighing scales, deal bags and a separated bag of cannabis.
Mr Deehan gave what Garda Moyles described as a ‘full and frank admission’ when interviewed.
“The MDMA was a once-off for that particular trip,” Garda Moyles said.
“A number of people were aware that he was traveling and put in order.
“He was new to the business, evidence on his phone and information would suggest that he was active for six or seven months.”
The Court heard that the overall street value of the cannabis was €5,800 and the MDMA was valued at €1,680.
Solicitor Michael Shiel said his client, a father of two, had been unemployed since returning to Ireland from England.
“This has been a big wake up call for him,” Mr Shields said.
“He hasn’t bought any drugs since and it is the wake up call that he needs. He tells me that a lot of it was for his own use. Yes, some of his friends put in an order and he got them, foolishly perhaps, but he did.”
Judge Kelly remanded Mr Deehan on his own bail to appear again before the September sitting of the Court.
