New figures from the Department of Justice have revealed that the number of Community Gardaí in Donegal has been slashed from twenty-one to two in the past four months.
Fianna Fáil TD Charlie McConalogue has said that he is deeply alarmed by the new figures.
“I am completely shocked by the latest Community Garda numbers, which confirm a 90% reduction in the number of officers in Donegal,” said McConalogue.
McConalogue said that the low number of Gardaí in the area was “ridiculous” and called for the Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald to “wake up to the shortage of Garda numbers and work with the Garda Commissioner to address the issue.”
“Community Gardaí play an important role in towns and villages across the county. They build up relationships with local people and are involved in crime prevention measures like Neighborhood Watch and Community Alert.”
McConalogue called on the Minister to address the reduction of Garda numbers in the area say that such a cut in such a short space of time as unheard of.
Five Donegal stations were closed in 2013 alone in Brockagh, Glencolmcille, Malin, Annagry and Churchill.
“We cannot afford to see more officers lost. I am looking for assurances from the minister,” ended McConlogue.
