1. John F Loughrey – Best Broker in Connaught/Ulster
John F Loughrey Financial Services in Letterkenny was crowned the regional broker of the year at the prestigious Irish Brokers Association (IBA) Life, Pensions and Investment Awards in Dublin recently. The event, held in Croke Park, gives recognition to the life, pension and investment brokers who have proved their excellence, professionalism and dedication to maintaining high standards in the Irish marketplace.
This year’s judging committee saw a significant increase in the number of nominations which, they said, reflects the prominence held by brokers of these highly respected industry awards.
John F Loughrey picked up the top award in the ‘Best Broker in Connaught/Ulster’ category.
Employing 16 staff, half of whom are qualified financial advisers, it is the largest brokerage in the north west.
John Loughrey said that, despite winning in 2014 and 2015, the latest victory was somewhat unexpected. “We couldn’t believe it, we are all over the moon and it is great to have received the award in Croke Park”. John was joined at the ceremony by his daughter Lisa, also a director of the company. He dedicated the award to his wife, Mary, with whom he co-founded the company 35 years ago.
Based at Crossview House in Letterkenny, John F. Loughrey provides independent advice on a range of services including pensions, investments, savings, deposits and protection. For more information go to www.jfl.ie or call 074 9124002
2. Donegal Youth Service – Celebrating Success
Donegal Youth Service has been a member of Letterkenny Chamber for a number of years they work on many programmes directly impacting our young people across the county. Check out this website www.donegalyouthservice.ie or contact them directly on admin@donegalyouthservice.ie if you would like to know more. They wanted to share with you some recent news.
Volunteer Karen Conlon was awarded a ‘Top Outstanding Young Person Award’ at the Donegal JCI Award Ceremony in April. She does so much amazing work at DYS and we are delighted to see her get the recognition she deserves.
Donegal Youth Council launched their ‘Sports Recognition for Girls Roadshow’ in the Aura Leisure Centre on Wednesday the 26th of April. The roadshow will continue throughout the month of May all throughout the county. It aims to promote more female participation in sports, create a more inclusive environment for girls and for female participation in sports to receive adequate recognition in comparison to their male counterparts. It was voted as a key priority by the young people of Donegal at the Agenda Day back in September 2016 when the 8th Donegal Youth Council were elected.
The public voted for Donegal Youth Service as the charity to receive the proceeds from this year’s Trash ’N’ Fashion Event! The big event happens on May 18th in the Mount Errigal Hotel. Tickets are only €10 and it’s going to be a really great night showcasing the talents of Donegal students.
Why not support this very worthwhile cause.

3. Network Survey on Brexit
Chambers Ireland carried out a Network Survey on Brexit over the past few weeks. It was a useful exercise in gauging what the Network’s primary concerns are regarding Brexit and what needs to happen next. There was a lot of consensus across the Network on the main concerns, Govt priorities and the steps that should be taken as part of Budget 2018.
· Concerns were; the possible negative impacts on trade, on competitiveness and on tourism.
· Chambers recommended the following Govt priorities during the Brexit negotiations- No hard Border with NI; a Trade agreement to be in place as soon as possible; and a realistic transition arrangement to be agreed once the two year period runs out.
· As for recommended Govt priorities as part of Budget 2018, significantly investing in infrastructure, introducing trade finance supports and looking at cuts to income tax came in as the top three.
