A county councillor has called for an immediate investigation into ordnance dumps offs the coast of Donegal.
Cllr Gerry McMonagle was speaking after a family called Gardai after the brought home a suspected artillery shell from a walk on a beach near Knockalla Drive.
Donegal Daily exclusively revealed yesterday how the family on the Manor View estate in Letterkenny called Gardai after they became worried about the device.
Local county councillor Gerry McMonagle, who lives on the nearby Ard na Ri estate, pleaded with people not to take such devices home if they find them but to contact gardai immediately.
Councillor McMonagle said the issue of ordnance devices being washed up on our coastline was one of increasing concern.
“First of all I am thankful that nobody was hurt because the potential consequences could have been huge here.
“I would appeal to the public never to take such items home from the beach or anywhere they find them.
“But overall the issue of ordnance dumps is something which we really must look at and must be investigated.
“These items are being washed up more and more and we must have an investigation into where such dumps rest of our coastline.
“There are obvious dumps which were put there during the Second World War and they pose a huge threat to the public using our coastline.
“We had a lucky escape here but how many times can we be lucky,?” he asked.
