Weekend Report by Phelim Davenport.
No rain about Ballyliffin at the weekend but there were no midges either, a stiff South Easterly wind saw to that.
The Saturday Open was on the Old Course and coming out on top was 8 handicapper Shaun O Donnell with a great round of 40 pts. Shaun was clearly under less pressure when he didn’t have me as a partner on Saturday. In 2nd place on 38 pts was Damien Gallagher [17] in a 3-way break of tie. I had long assumed that Paddy Mackle [9] had emigrated but no he popped up to take 3rd place with 38 pts also. It’s amazing what a wee pep talk can do for you on the first tee. In 4th place also on 38 pts was John K Farren [18]. The Gross went to David Mc Geough [5] with 31 gross pts.
A bright dry Day for the Sunday Confined, the only problem was it would have blown the horns of a Moiled cow.
I’ve been playing in Ballyliffin over 30 years but I never remember a scratch golfer taking the top prize in a Sunday Competition. Keelan Quigg [0] bucked the trend on Sunday he went around in 2 over giving him 34 pts and the winning score. That was some round. In 2nd place was Mr Ballyliffin Patrick Mc Conologue [14] with 32 pts. Patrick had an amazing 23 pts on the front nine but I can only assume that somebody stole his clubs somewhere on the back nine because he had only 9 pts. Jim Monagle [12] did the opposite he could muster 12 on the front but hit a steady 19 on the back to give him 31 pts and 3rd place. Paul Mattews [24] was steadier, 2 nines of 16 and 15 gave him 31 pts also and 4th place.
Those Buncrana men are wily customers Paul Van Dessel [3] went out in the evening when the wind settled a bit and took the Gross with 26 gross pts. I was so glad to see them coming up the 18th, you just never know when you would have to send out a search party.
The Wed. Soc. was won by Vincent Cochrane with 34pts. In 2nd place was Pat Mc Laughlin also with 34pts and in 3rd place was Paul O Donoghue with 33pts.
With all the excitement of “The Wedding” last week I forgot another special “Wedding”. Bernie, our Bar Steward married the love of her life Patsy Doherty, mind you she went a bit further than the other two to get married, all the way to City Hall in New York, anyway she is back safe and sound with us now and she has packed poor Patsy back to work in England again. Congrats to you both. Happy Golfing.
