Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher Leas Cheann Comhairle has expressed his sincere sympathy to the family of the late Sean Mc Eniff.
Deputy Gallagher said the late Mr McEniff was both a friend and a colleague for many years and an individual who dedicated his entire life to Public Service and the betterment of his area through politics and the development of the tourism sector.
The Bundoran man was the longest serving councillor in Ireland having served 57 years on Local Authorities between Town Council and County Council.
The late Cllr Sean Mc Eniff was first elected to Bundoran Town District Council in 1960 and in the subsequent County Council election of 1967 he secured a seat on Donegal County Council, winning the first Fianna Fáil seat ever held in the Bundoran area, he successfully retained his seat in every subsequent county council election.
He served as Chairperson of Donegal County Council on two separate occasions, was Vice Chairperson of Donegal County Council on numerous occasions having last occupied that position in 2015- 2016 and he holds the record for the number of times he served as Chairperson of Bundoran Town Council – twenty four separate occasions he had been elected to that position.
Deputy Galagher said “Sean Mc Eniff was a pioneer in the Irish Tourism industry and devoted his life to developing tourism in the northwest of Ireland and in Bundoran in particular, he was a former Director of Fáilte Ireland and previously served as Chairperson of Tourism Northwest.
“He was named Donegal Person of the year in 1996. A former member of the Board of Letterkenny Regional College, what is now LYIT. Sean played a key and instrumental role in the establishing of Magh Ene College in Bundoran. She was also an active member of the the NWHB.
“Sean was a proud Donegal man but an even prouder Bundoran man, a true Gael and feverant supporter of Donegal GAA at Club and County level.
“I express my deepest sympathy to his wife Elish, to his family his sons, daughters, his Daughters in law, Sons in Law, his 21 grandchildren, brothers and sister and extended family.
“Their bereavement and loss will be comforted by the level of esteem and respect Sean was held in by so many and the pride they can take from the successes he attained in his life and the public duty he gave to his community of Bundoran and south Donegal since 1960.
“Eternal rest grant onto him O Lord and may he Rest in Peace.”
