A SINGLE GOAL from Michael Devine was enough to Fanad United to overcome Letterkenny Rovers and win the Colin Breslin Memorial Cup this afternoon.
Fanad United 1-0 Letterkenny Rovers
In a contest of few chances, Devine steered home the only goal on 71 minutes from a cross by Darren McElwaine at Flagpole Park in Rathmullan.
Fanad, managed by Niall Doherty and Oran Blaney, went through their league campaign unbeaten but had been beaten by the Leckview Park in both the John Gorey Cup and the FAI Youth Cup.
Anthony Gorman’s Letterkenny Rovers did create a couple of late opportunities, with substitute Brandon Manues as involved as anyone.
Six minutes from time, from a long Zach Gorman ball, Manues shot just wide and just a minute beforehand, the same player had hit the Fanad side-netting, although Dane Dunworth might feel as though he had the shot covered.
Rovers did almost go close to an early lead only for Fanad’s Brad Patterson to block from Cody Brogan.
Fanad, though, got more into their stride the longer the half went on and by the break might;vr felt as though they’d shaded it.
Devine had a free header from a Bernard McGettigan cross on 10 minutes and was unfortunate to hot the post.
McElwaine looped a header over on the half-hour from another McGettigan centre and Devine’s free-kick on 34 minutes was batted away by Eoghan Jordan in the Letterkenny goal.
The best chance in the third quarter was Rovers’ as a well-hot shot from Karl McGinley was blocked on the line by James Kerr on the Fanad line.
The goal finally arrived with 19 minutes to go as Devine set McElwaine free down the line and then angled the finish into the far corner following a fine cross from the winger from the right.
