From 21st to the 24th of March 2017, the Physical Education and Home Economics departments in Coláiste Na Carraige co-ordinated and ran a healthy eating and physical activity week.
Each day students, staff and Donegal GAA County players ran a variety of action packed events to promote healthy eating and exercise within the school.
On Tuesday, Transition Year students prepared and served healthy fruit smoothies, which sold out in record time! On the same day, the talented GAA star and Sky Sports mentor, Christy Toye addressed the whole school on the importance of food, sleep and exercise. He stressed how important those three elements are to be successful in both academia and sport.
On Wednesday, delicious fruit pots were prepared in the Home Economics room. There was also a great emphasis placed on healthy lunchboxes and portion sizes.
Mr. Patrick Mc Shane and rising county star Gary Molloy refereed many fast paced competitive NBA basketball matches. At the same time, in another room, Breege Hudy was motivating staff and students to take part in a 30 minute cardiovascular workout. The fitness slogan for the day was “make yourself proud.”
On Thursday, sharp shooting GAA star Eoin Mc Hugh addressed students on the importance of eating fruit and vegetables and consuming the right amount of water each day. Eoin Mc Hugh also refereed 2nd year Gaelic matches.
Fitness sensation Breege Hudy treated the students to a 30 minute body toning session to energetic dance tunes. The fitness slogan for the day was “never give up.”
Earlier that morning the Home Economics department had prepared oatmeal cookies which went down a treat. Oats offered a slow release of energy throughout the day, no doubt contributing to the stamina that was displayed at the lunchtime work out session.
On Friday the Home Economics kitchen provided healthy and tasty banana and oat muffins, apple and cinnamon and blueberry muffins. These muffins proved very popular amongst staff and students.
The senior students danced the day away with Ceilí Dancing! Dancing sensation Mr. Clement Gallagher instructed the students on how to Ceilí dance. This was a fun and lively experience and all students thoroughly enjoyed the combination of cardiovascular and toning workouts in an oversubscribed fitness class. The fitness slogan for the day was “a dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work.”
The week finished with a raffle for a football signed by our Donegal All-Star captain Michael Murphy. The winner of the Michael Murphy sponsored football was Emma Gallagher.
Coláiste Na Carriage’s whole school and staff approach ensured a successful and fun week! Staff members and chief photographer Molly Sherry made sure that the CnC (@scaipansceal) Twitter account was updated.
Well done to 2B students and their fabulous healthy eating artwork! The winner will be announced shortly!
The week was a huge success which was evident from the great buzz that was around all week.
Huge credit goes to Ms. Louise Mc Goldrick and Ms. Tracey Floyd for organising the whole programme of events.
