In his column in the Irish Daily Star, former Donegal GAA star Eamon McGee revealed that he had a gun pulled on him during a “wild session” in Orlando, Florida.
The Donegal team traveled to Florida in 2011 after winning their first Ulster title in nineteen years.
However over the course of the night out, a local “got thick” and pulled out a gun.
“After one heavy night, a few of us headed for a few settlers in the morning while the rest of the players headed off to see how Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck were getting on.
Although they only planned on stayed out for a few pints, it turned into a “wild session”. Things turned sour when “the wrong thing” was said in front of Florida locals, leading to raised voices, and ultimately a gun being pulled on McGee.
“The couple of sociable breakers turned into a wild session and we ended up in a bar that should have been called ‘Get The Hell Out Of Here’.
“This genius ended up in the middle of a gang of locals and, inevitably, said the wrong thing. Voices were raised and one boy was getting thick. Next thing he pulled out a gun.
“Here’s the thing…a gun pointed in your direction sobers you up quicker than a triple expresso.
Not realising the danger they were in, Walsh thought the gun was a lighter and asked if he could borrow it to light his smoke!
“David Walsh, though, figured your man had a fancy lighter and asked him could he light his cigarette.
“Later, David took credit for having defused the situation, but I saw the glazed look in his eye. He genuinely thought it was a lighter.”
