Tourism numbers in Ireland hit a record high in 2016 and Letterkenny businesses are confident that they can bring more of these visitors to Donegal in the coming years – that was the message from Go Visit Letterkenny’s first breakfast morning in The Silver Tassie Hotel last week.
Go Visit Letterkenny is a new tourism initiative for the town which was established to allow businesses to work together with a shared vision and desire to position Letterkenny as the heart of the northwest and the ideal hub to experience the best of urban and rural Donegal.
The ‘Go Visit Letterkenny’ breakfast morning was a great success with a number of new businesses and organisations signing up. Guest speakers Máire Aine Gardiner of Fáilte Ireland and Shane Smyth of Bundoran Tourism outlined the opportunities available for the northwest and how working together can bring more tourists to the county.
Meanwhile, the Go Visit Letterkenny group has secured its first major event for the town by bringing a major country music festival, Jamboree in the Park, to Letterkenny on May 20th. At the Breakfast Morning, Go Visit Letterkenny member, Ciaran Brogan thanked new businesses and organisations for attending and spoke about the bright future for Donegal and Letterkenny:
“There’s great positivity around Go Visit Letterkenny and a strong appetite for businesses to work together to attract more overseas visitors to the northwest. The Wild Atlantic Way was launched three years ago, and presents a great opportunity to entice more visitors to Donegal and Letterkenny. We already have some great partners on board and we want to grow our membership and build on the work done to date and market Letterkenny as the ideal hub for visitors looking to experience the best that Donegal has to offer.”
“Donegal is home to some of the most scenic attractions and best events in Ireland including the Sliabh League Cliffs, iconic Fanad Lighthouse, the Donegal International Rally, Earagail Arts Festival and Glenveagh National Park to name a few. If we can work together, we can create even more cultural experiences for the town and businesses will benefit,” Brogan added.
The Go Visit Letterkenny group is run in partnership with the business community in Letterkenny and the initiative is being supported with a marketing and PR budget. A dedicated website – govisitletterkenny.ie – will provide visitors with all the information they need to experience the best of rural and urban Donegal, providing a comprehensive resource where visitors to the town can access all of the information they need to experience the best of the northwest.
