The recently-reformed North West Volleyball Club travelled to the University of Ulster Volleyball Tournament in Coleraine and came home as victors.
This was the club’s first victory of the season and augers well for the rest of the year.
The club played a round-robin league to begin with and were narrowly defeated in the first games but as the competition progressed the team from the North West began to settle and played some fine attacking volleyball.
Having qualified for the knock-out stages of the competition North West defeated the local team from the University in the quarter finals on a score of 15-6.
The semi-final against a fancied Ballymoney side saw a thriller of a game with some great rallies and fine scoring by both teams. North West held their nerve and progressed to the final on a 15-13 score line.
The final saw NW pitted against another strong Coleraine side and having started brightly they held their lead throughout and emerged victorious on a score of 15-9.
North West team: Chris Darragh, Aska Mooney, Clare Roulston, Ridhcheall Doherty, Simon Ward and Michael Doherty.
North West Volleyball Club is made up of players living in Donegal, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Derry and Sligo and as the name suggests includes everyone in the area. Volleyball is a fun game played indoors and is a great way to stay fit. There’s also a great social aspect to it as well.
The club continues to play and train in the CPI Centre, Castlefinn every Wednesday night from 7 to 9.
The club takes part in various tournaments throughout the year and this even includes beach volleyball.
NW Volleyball Club is open to women and men over the age of 16 and new members are always welcome. All levels are catered for.
