Nanny goal key as Fanad overturn Moville
Moville 0-8 – 1-8 Gaeil Fhánada.
A 42nd minute goal from Seami ‘Nanny’ Friel was the crucial score as Fanad made the long journey back from Carrick Field, Moville with 2 points safely secured. Indeed, for large parts of the first half it didn’t look that way. Fanad were lackluster and nervous in possession and Moville capitalised on some poor play from the young Fanad side.
Weather conditions were fair, a slight breeze blowing towards the changing room side did help Moville in the first half however some of their shooting was very impressive with all 6 first half points coming from difficult positions. Danny Murphy was pulling the strings from midfield and he landed the first score of the game from wide on the left, a stunt he would pull twice more before the half closed. Michael Barr was also proving a handful while the Hegartys, Seamus and Eunan were always hungry to get on possession of the ball. Fanad struggled, but stayed in contention. Despite going 3 points down within the first 7 minutes, they steadied the ship with two brilliantly taken free kicks from the boot of Seami ‘Nanny’ Friel. Moville pushed on and hit the next 3 scores of the half to lead by 4 points, 0-6 to 0-2. There was a moment of controversy in the first half that had a huge bearing on the game. A shot from Murphy dropped short. Prior to claiming the ball, Brendan Friel’s gloves appeared to catch the net before making contact with the ball, prompting the home support to believe the ball had hit the net. Mickey Mulhern was having none of it and waved play on. In between, Jimmy Coyle and James Gallagher were Fanad’s best performers. Patrick Carr, Niall Carr and Seami Friel all had efforts that drifted wide before the half time whistle went, a whistle the Fanad contingent would have been happy to hear.
HT: Moville 0-6 – 0-2 Gaeil Fhánada
Some tough words at half time from Aidan McAteer seemed to work for Fanad. From the throw in, the ball was batted to Oisin Shiels who fed Mark Friel to slot over. Shiels himself fired a superb point over before Michael Sweeney had an effort drop short before making amends and hitting the target from 45m to make it a one point game. Then came the goal – a lofty kick out was broken into Sweeney’s path who played a one-two with Jonny Friel before off loading to Seami ‘Nanny’ Friel who finished superbly. This put Fanad two points to the good and they were now ticking. Alan McAteer and Eoin Carr entered the fray for Sweeney and Oisin McFadden on 45 mins. Enda Faulkner helped steady the Moville ship but it was one way traffic – all in Fanad’s favor. Fanad won the next 4 kick outs and hit 2 scores, one from Paddy Heraghty after some neat approach play from Alan McAteer and another from Mark Friel. Barr responded for Moville before Niall Carr swiveled and drove the ball high over the bar when a goal could have been maneuvered. Fanad continued to dominate but couldn’t trouble the scoreboard hitting 6 wides in quick succession. Moville tried hard to manufacture a goal chance but it never arrived, their final score a free from Barr after Paddy Heraghty nipped a goal chance in the bud with a tactical foul. Fanad kept possession well through Aiden Heraghty, Mark Friel, Kevin McGonigle and Mylie McBride as the clock hit 64 minutes and Mulhern blew the full time whistle.
It certainly was a game of two halves with Fanad causing more damage with the wind being the ultimate difference. Both teams were short a number of regulars and one thing is for sure, teams will struggle for points in Moville this year. The result brought some positives for Fanad and plenty to work on for Aidan and his backroom team who will be delighted to get up and running. Fanad have also added to their sequence of opening day league victories – a sequence of 5 now.

Well done to Jimmy Coyle who was voted as Senior team captain for the 2017 season. He will be ably assisted by vice captain Seami ‘Nanny’ Friel for the year.
Shaun McElwaine will help steer the reserve ship for the upcoming season. Shaun has been putting some of our younger contingent to shame during our tough pre-season and will bring a wealth of maturity and experience to the role.
