Finn Harps manager Ollie Horgan felt that his side’s new attacking quality and ‘a little bit of stubbornness’ were to thank for a 2-1 win over St Patrick’s Athletic in Richmond Park tonight.
It was, as the Harps boss noted, ‘backs to the wall stuff’ for Harps, but the ground it out for a first win over the Saints since 2001.
“The little bit of quality that we have added attacking-wise got us the 2-1 lead and the little bit of stubbornness kept the 2-1 lead,” Horgan said.
“It was a great three points. Probably unexpected and maybe not deserved, but you can’t take anything away from the lads – they stood up and were counted.
“The first half won us the game, despite us making a horrendous start. That made it even better.”
Houston fired in a 19th minute equaliser and on-loan O’Connor pounced on the stroke of half-time for what proved the winner. Harps, though, had to endure almost six minutes of added time and they were clinging on by the conclusion.
Horgan said: “In the first half we had loads of legs and energy. We pressed them high.
“We ran out of legs. We couldn’t sustain the energy and work rate. To be fair to them, sitting back is something we did for the last number of years and they stood up and were counted.”
