A former Letterkenny Councillor has insisted the drugs unit in Letterkenny is being shut down.
Anti-drugs campaigner PJ Blake said he has received first-hand information to say the unit, which consists of approximately five Gardai, is being disbanded this weekend.
His statement comes following denials by the Garda Press Office that such a move is on the cards.
But Mr Blake insisted “It is being shut according to my sources which are directly involved with the unit.
“There are approximately five officers involved with the Letterkenny unit and they have been told they will stop their work this Saturday and be transferred back to their ordinary duties.
“I am not saying this for fun. Nobody is more disappointed than me that this news is filtering through,” he said.
He said he was now going to seek a meeting with Chief Superintendent Terri McGinn in an effort to clarify the situation.
He added that, now more than ever, Letterkenny needs a dedicated drugs unit.
“You only have to hear the drugs finds coming from the courts to realise that this problem is greater than ever.
“I do appreciate that Garda resources are limited but we are taking resources away from one of the greatest dangers we have in modern society. Our young people’s futures are at stake here and we are closing down our drugs unit in the town,” he added.
