The HSE in Co Donegal has re-launched the Stanford Quality of Life Programme. This programme ran very successfully in Co Donegal from 2010 to 2015.
Quality of Life is a free programme for adults (over 18 years of age) with a long-term health condition or adult carers.
Long-term health conditions include Diabetes, Stroke, COPD, Asthma, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Osteoporosis, Crohn’s, Colitis, Multiple Sclerosis, high blood pressure, heart disease, depression and many others.
The programme addresses many problems which are common to all people with long-term health conditions and carers such as anxiety, pain, fatigue, fear of exercising, fear of the future, helplessness, disempowerment and feeling poorly understood etc.
The aim of this programme is to help people to ‘self-manage’ better.
Participants learn how to tackle these problems using a ‘toolkit’, the tools include:
· Breathing techniques
· how to get a better night’s sleep
· correct use of medicines
· how to communicate with healthcare professionals
· exercising safely
· healthy eating
· coping with difficult emotions
and more.
The programme is run over 6 weeks with one workshop per week of 2.5 hours duration. Workshops are delivered by trained tutors, many of whom have a long term health condition themselves.
There is a maximum of 12 people per group. The programmes are run at various venues throughout the county.
