Christmas is over and springtime seems a long way off yet, but don’t despair – Termon Drama Group are back to cheer up your winter evenings with a lively production of ‘Strictly for the Birds’!
This is the third offering from this group and follows their previous successful productions of ‘Don’t Tell The Wife’ and ‘Stop it… Nurse!’
‘Strictly For The Birds’ is set in 1960’s Belfast where the only ‘credit crunch’ came at the end of the quarter when you had to clear your ‘slate’, or when the ‘tick’ man, coal man or rent man managed to catch you at home.
Muriel and Herbie Glover, played by Madeline Mc Daid and Stephen Ferry, and their daughter Susan enjoy life in a wee terraced house somewhere in Belfast.
Their neighbour, Lily Dodds (Annette Sheridan), is a regular visitor, calling in for a wee drop of tea, or to swap magazines.
Herbie keeps pigeons in his loft in the back yard and has collected quite a few cups for racing his birds.
All is bliss except for ‘aul soap suds’ the new next door neighbour, who insists on putting out her washing just as the pigeons are coming home from a race.
When Muriel and Lily draw the favourite in the Irish sweepstakes and are likely to win a considerable sum of money, Muriel’s posh mother and brother, Stanley, suddenly become regular visitors, as does Albert Mc Cartney, the ‘tick man’ who begins courtin’ Lily, or at least
Lily’s money!
Albert will be played by Colin Blades, with Deirdre Gallagher taking on the role of the formidable Mrs Monteith and Connell Mc Grenra returning to the group this year to play Stanley.
Daughter Susan (Tracey Doherty) has her own troubles with her biker boyfriend, Billy, and the arty student, Clive, vying for her attentions.
The parts of Billy and Clive are being played by two newcomers to the group, Henry Gallagher and Trevor Alcorn.
The play races along to the inevitable conclusion but not before the audience is treated to a hilarious evening of comedy and mayhem that are the hallmarks of Sam Cree’s writing.
The play will run for four nights, Wednesday 22nd February, Thursday 23rd February, Saturday 25th February and Sunday 26th February.
Shows start at 8pm with doors opening at 7.30pm except Sunday night which has an earlier start time of 7pm, doors opening 6.30pm.
Tickets priced at €10 are available from An Craoibhin (07491 19988) or Madeline Mc Daid 087 771651. Tickets are already selling quickly!
The proceeds from Wednesday nights show will go to the No Barriers Foundation.
The Letterkenny-based No Barriers Foundation aims to create an inclusive health facility equipped with specialist neurological equipment that would enable anyone with a disability to train and improve their current levels of physical and mental health by targeting mobility, strength and physical fitness regardless of their current baseline.
