The death recently of well-known Carndonagh man James Kelly brought to an end a full life during which he touched so many people in so many positive ways.
James or Jimmy, as he was better known, would have celebrated his 100th birthday on February 26th next.
He passed away on the 21st January peacefully at his home in Southwick, West Sussex with his son Paul and daughter Sharon by his side, Jimmy will be reunited with his beloved late wife June.
One of a family of ten, Jimmy worked for Watson’s in Carndonagh making charcoal from cut down timber, at this time the church which dominates the skyline in Carn was not even built and there was only one car in the town at that time.
Jimmy left his home in Carndonagh as a young man when he joined the merchant navy working on both the big luxury liners the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth, he spent a lot of time in New York and travelled much of Europe.
He returned home to Ireland in 1996, aged 78, with his wife June to visit his sister Agnes and her family, at the time Jimmy said that visiting the family home at Magheramore was a very emotional experience for him, he also met up with Jimmy Mccole and his family.
Jimmy will be sadly missed by his son Paul and daughter Sharon, son in law Simon, grandchildren Sara, Jamie, Ryan, Luke and great grandchildren James and Mason and all his friends and family.
His funeral will take place today, January 9th, in Southwick, West Sussex.
