The first month of 2017 has brought some of the mildest temperatures in a decade to Donegal, according to a Met Eireann report.
Records from Malin Head in January 2017 showed a monthly mean of 6.8°C, which is the mildest January figures in 10 years.
Malin Head also had the windiest conditions in Ireland during January. Monthly mean wind speeds were 16.6 knots (30.7 km/h) at the northwest weather station.
Both the month’s highest gust and 10-minute mean wind speed were reported at Malin Head, Co Donegal. The highest gust was on the 11th with 58 knots (107 km/h) while the month’s highest 10-minute mean wind speed was 45 knots (83 km/h) on the 13th.
Ireland’s most northerly point recorded some of the lowest levels of sunshine in the country, with 53 total hours of sun.
Overall, Met Eireann said that January was a mild and dry month everywhere. The mainly dry settled weather continued into the New Year and high pressure remained the dominant feature through the month of January.
All rainfall totals were below average too. Rainfall recorded at Malin Head was 47% below average and Finner rain levels were 42% below average in January 2017.
