A young man who lay flat down in a ditch when Gardai arrived on the scene of an incident has been fined a total of €300.
On January 22nd last, Gardai found a number of men walking along the main Letterkenny to Derry Road just after 7am.
Among the men was Shane McGowan who was initially face-down in a ditch trying to avoid detection when Gardai arrived.
When spoken to by Gardai, McGowan was unsteady on his feet, was highly intoxicated and was slurring his words.
Gardai said McGowan began to abuse them, calling them various names and said he was only walking home.
He was arrested and released on bail to appear at Letterkenny District Court yesterday but failed to appear.
The court was told that McGowan had no previous convictions.
Judge Paul Kelly fined McGowan €100 for being drunk and disorderly and a further €200 for using threatening and abusive language.
He said as there was no attendance, he would forfeit the cash which was already lodged in court.
