Enda Kenny has been encouraged to abandon the visit to Washington DC for Saint Patrick’s day following President Donald Trump’s ban on immigration from seven Muslim countries for a period of 90 days.
President Trump banned travel from Syria, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. Even those with dual citizenship to one of the aforementioned countries will be stopped at the US border.
In light of this, there have been calls for Enda Kenny to abandon his plans to visit the White House on Saint Patrick’s Day in March.
Petitions have been set up to encourage Kenny to boycott the trip. One such petition has garnered almost 20,000 signatures and was set up by Cornelius Traas who said; “I want Enda Kenny to be aware that if he does decide to travel to meet President Donald Trump on St. Patrick’s Day, that he is not travelling in my name.”
Charlie Flanagan, the Minister for Foreign Affairs has said that he “shares the concerns of other EU partners” on the changes made to US immigration policy. Minister Flanagan will travel to Capitol Hill in Washington DC next week to discuss immigration.
We're calling on the Taoiseach to put off his March visit to the Whitehouse. How can he hand over a bowl of Shamrock in these circumstances?
