The HSE have confirmed that that Midwifery clinics are to recommence at Dungloe Community Hospital today.
The confirmation comes following a lengthy Dáil campaign by Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Deputy Pearse Doherty demanding that the Government reinstate Ante-Natal services at the hospital which were first suspended at the facility in November 2014.
Speaking following yesterday’s announcement, Deputy Doherty said:
“I am absolutely delighted to now have it confirmed that Ante-Natal services will return to Dungloe Community Hospital this Week, meaning that expecting mothers in West Donegal may now access midwifery clinics locally at Dungloe.
“This terrific announcement comes after over two years without Midwifery clinics operating out of the hospital which were first suspended back in November 2014.
“Immediately following the removal of the service, I raised their suspension with the Minister for Health in the Dáil, and over the course of those two years, I have repeatedly called on the Government to reinstate the service which for years before their removal, has provided exceptional care for mothers and their families.
“The HSE has today confirmed to me that Information in relation to the Obstetric / Midwifery Clinics has now been circulated to GPs in the area and that the clinic will commence this Wednesday 18th January, giving mothers the choice of midwifery care in Dungloe.
“This news will be particularly welcomed by the countless women who have used this vital service in the past, and indeed will come as great news to all those who will now be able to avail of midwifery service at Dungloe both now and into the future.
“Recognition and credit must also be given to the local community who have led a very impressive campaign ever since the service was first suspended and have passionately fought for these clinics to be reopened.
“I gave a commitment over two years ago now that I would fight to have Ante-Natal and Midwifery services returned to Dungloe and I am absolutely thrilled that today that commitment is finally being fulfilled.”
