Donegal County Council’s Planning Section yesterday decided to refuse planning permission for a proposed wind turbine at Gaoth Dobhair Industrial Estate.
Local residents highlighted their concerns to Donegal County Council and objected to the construction of the 123.5 metre blade tip height wind turbine on Údarás na Gaeltachta owned land in the heart of Gweedore.
Commenting on the decision to refuse the application submitted by LIR Energy Ltd, Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Deputy Pearse Doherty said:
“I very much welcome the local authority’s decision to refuse planning permission for this development, which had sought to erect an 85m hub height wind turbine on the grounds of the Údarás na Gaeltacht Industrial Estate here in Gaoth Dobhair.
“This refusal was the correct decision in my opinion and I think it is only right that the collective work and tireless efforts of the local community is recognised and commended.
“Many local residents and groups submitted their objections against this development to the planning authorities, and it was a privilege to have the opportunity to work closely alongside many of them, together with my colleagues Cllr John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh and Cllr Marie-Therese Gallagher.
“While today’s announcement will come as a huge relief to the local community here in Gaoth Dobhair, I am nonetheless very disappointed that officials from An tÚdarás did not respond to correspondence which I sent to the body a number of weeks ago requesting that it reconsiders its position and officially withdraw its support for this project in light of the public’s opposition to the plans.
“Notwithstanding this, today is a good news day for West Donegal and full praise for this terrific result must go to the local community.”
