The Garda who leads road safety in Donegal has pleaded to motorists not to add to the horrific death toll on the county’s roads in 2016.
So far this year a total of 13 people have lost their lives on Donegal’s roads – one more than last year’s total of 12 deaths.
Garda Inspector Michael Harrison, who is head of the Garda Traffic Corp locally, told Donegal Daily that he was pleading with people to drive safely over this Bank Holiday weekend and into the New Year.
“The bottom line is that thirteen deaths are thirteen deaths too many on Donegal roads.
“I have been at the scene of too many tragic incidents over the years and the same patterns emerge time and time again.
“I am pleading with people to observe the three factors which prevent accidents and can prevent deaths – the wearing of seat-belts, people not drinking and driving and drivers reducing their speed.
“I would plead with motorists as we come to the end of the year not to become another statistic on our roads.
“I would also appeal to them to think of these three factors and actively practise safer driving into the New Year,” he said.
