We may have had an unseasonably mild Christmas but 2017 is set to start with plunging tempertaures and snow.
Met Éireann has said there will be snow on New Year’s Day in places.
“It will feel very cold on New Year’s Day with snow showers on higher grounds mainly in the north and east of the country,” Met Éireann forecaster Liz Walsh said.
However the Met Eireann spokeswoman said the snow will be mixed wiht rain and it will not lie on low ground but could rest on hills.
“There will be rain for the next few days so there wont be an appreciable amount of snow on the ground. It will be hit and miss.”
Today will be a mainly dry day with good sunny spells developing, but cloud will increase later in the west and northwest.
Rain will continue into Friday and New Year’s Eve with “mild temperatures for this time of year”.
However, it will be a cold start to 2017 as Met Éireann said “it will feel much colder on New Year’s Day”.
