Donegal Under-21s to play in McKenna Cup with raft of seniors unavailable

THE DONEGAL senior team will not be playing in next month’s Dr McKenna Cup, it has been confirmed.

Instead, Declan Bonner’s Donegal Under-21s will line out in the competition, with Donegal drawn to face Tyrone, Cavan and UUJ.

Donegal Sport Hub is reporting that 16 of the senior panel would be unavailable – mainly due to commitments with their College teams – for the competition.

The decision to field the Under-21s comes after management from the two camps met with County Board officials.

The move is similar to 2013 when Maxi Curran, now a selector with Gallagher, managed his Under-21s in the competition during Jim McGuinness’s tenure as manager.

Donegal returned to collective training last weekend and will play Sligo in a challenge game this Sunday at Colaiste Ailigh.

The Under-21s, meanwhile, are in preparation for their Ulster Under-21 Championship meeting with Tyrone in March.
