Deputy Thomas Pringle has criticised the Government’s failure to ratify the UN Convention which would see the passing of legislation protecting the rights of people with disabilities.
During Leaders’ Questions, Deputy Pringle read out an excerpt of a letter written to the Taoiseach over 6 months ago by local Donegal disability activist Frank Larkin.
The Letterkenny man outlined his personal experience as a person with a disability personally affected by the failure of Ireland to ratify the UN Convention.
“I thought Frank’s powerful piece would remind the Taoiseach Enda Kenny and everyone in the Dáil of the real impact the lack of political will is having on people with disabilities across the country.
“It’s shameful to think that it’s been nearly 10 years since Ireland signed the UN Convention with barely any progress made. Ireland is now the only EU country that has yet to ratify it.
“The fact that the Government has missed its own target to ratify the Convention by the end of this year is unacceptable. Now we are hearing of squabbles between the Minister for Justice and the Minister for Health over who should take responsibility for this. Every Minister is responsible and for that reason I called on the Taoiseach to impress upon his own Government to take responsibility and urgently progress the ratification process.
“People like Frank have waited far too long to see this Convention ratified. Ratification would provide the framework whereby the rights of those with disabilities can be upheld and defended which would lead to greater financial security, specific needs being met such as housing, and greater access to public transport and public buildings.
“I called on the Taoiseach to commit to a specific date to Ratify the Convention but to no avail. His response was cold comfort to the many who worked hard to see this realised. It’s thanks to people like Frank who have campaigned and petitioned and have been so honest with their experience that we can try hold the Government to account on its shortcomings.
“I look forward to working alongside Frank and others to ensure a timely ratification process and to make sure the Government does not renege on its commitments again” concludes Pringle.
