SEAMUS Coleman has been linked heavily with a move to Manchester United, but getting one over on the Reds will be his aim on Sunday.
Coleman’s Everton have won just once in their last nine games and the Killybegs man, in typically blunt fashion, says the Toffees ‘have ‘have been nowhere near good enough’ of late.
Everton manager Ronald Koeman copped a lot of flak after a 1-0 loss to Southampton at the weekend, but Everton have a chance to go ahead of United at Goodison Park on Sunday.
“We just want to get out there and put things right,” Republic of Ireland captain Coleman said.
“We have to do this kind of interview – it’s protocol – and you can say all of the right things, but you have to go out and do it on the pitch.
“It’s going to be a tough game against Manchester United, but we have to go out and perform and do so for 90 minutes – not for 45.
“We can take confidence from the home record. The home form has been good. If we beat United on Sunday, we go above them in the league.
“We have to look forward and do the right things. When we come off that pitch we have to be able to look in the mirror.
“There have been some games recently where we’ve been nowhere near good enough. We may have played well in spells but we need to do it over the 90 minutes.”
The Republic of Ireland captain consistently preaches the mantra of hard work – and believes Everton’s luck will turn.
He said: “I just try to approach things the same way every day.
“I try and do the right things. Some games, things don’t go right for you but that’s not an excuse for you stop trying to do things correctly.
“You have to keep being professional, and if we can do that then hopefully our luck will turn.”
United, from their days under the management of David Moyes – who first brought Coleman to Everton – have been admirers of the Donegal ace, who is contracted to the Toffees until 2019.
United boss Jose Mourinho is on the hunt for a right-back and could make a move for Coleman in January.
