ST EUNAN’S College Swimminhg Team enjoyed good success at the Ulster Grammar Schools Swimming Competition on Saturday.

It was an early start with 13 pupils boarding the bus at 5.30am in Letterkenny to make the long journey to the 7 Towers Leisure Centre in Ballymena.

The swimmers represented the school in all three age groups: juniors, intermediates and seniors.

The junior (11-14 years) events where first up of the day with Jack Nee, Billy Black, Leo Camacho, Eoin Bonar and Cian Mulligan competing.

All of the swimmers put in sterling performances, placing well in their individual heats.

Eoin progressed into the finals of both his events and narrowly missing out on medal positions, Cian had a very strong swim and took silver in the 50m breaststroke final.

The second session of the day was the intermediates  (15-16 years).

In this group were Marius Giddy, Conal Bonar, Thomas Kees and Filip Blazesczek.

Again all swimmers swam hard in all their individual heats amidst some stiff competition.

Thomas Kees qualified for the 50m Butterfly final and secured a bronze medal, just beaten on the wall by a touch.

Filip Blazesczek also made it through to the final of the 50m backstroke, where he secured a bronze medal.

The final session of the day was the seniors (17+ years).

Nathaniel Giddy, Matthew Gegarty, Thomas Coyle and Jonathan Martin were the men in action here.

The first event up was the Medley and Freestyle Team Relays where the swimmers fought hard and earned bronze medals in both events.

This was followed by the individual events, with all the swimmers again stepping up to the blocks and ging it their all, placing well in their individual heats with some progressing through to the finals, resulting in more medals.

Jonathan Martin won silver in both the 50m Backstroke and 50m Butterfly events; Thomas Coyle, had a fantastic swim in the individual medley and comfortably won gold; Nathaniel Giddy also had a fantastic swim in the 50m breaststroke final and was just pipped into bronze medal position on the finish.

A massive congratulations to all the swimmers involved, who did the school proud.

All swimmers will be back training with the Swilly Seals in preparation for the next gala.
