Opening of new cancer centre given warm welcome

Senator Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has warmly welcomed news that the North West Cancer Centre has now opened its services to cancer patients from Donegal and the rest of the region.

Senator Mac Lochlainn commended the cancer campaign groups in Donegal and Derry who fought for this centre over many years.

He said “The opening of the new North West Cancer Centre in Altnagelvin is one of the best news stories that the people of Donegal have had in a long time.

“For far too long, cancer patients and their families from our county have had to endure the long journey to Galway or Dublin for radiotherapy treatment with all the additional stress and cost that this entails.

“It is estimated that 90% of cancer patients from Donegal and the North West region can be treated at the new centre.

“I commend the cancer campaign groups in Donegal and Derry who fought for this centre in our region. The success of their campaign demonstrates that by working together in this North West cross border region, we can turn around the years of neglect.

“Our people in Donegal, Derry and Tyrone deserve equality of access to public services. The opening of the North West Cancer Centre is a major victory and hopefully the first of many”.
