Aodh Ruadh will be staging an underage football awards presentation evening in the Abbey Centre, Ballyshannon on Saturday 3rd December at 5pm. Donegal legend Michael Murphy will be joining us as we celebrate a year of underage football in Aodh Ruadh. There will be presentations to all players in Bord na nÓg and to the ladies under 12, under 13 and under 16 teams.
There was a big crowd at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh for finals night in the under 10 Ballyshannon Shoe Company winter league last Friday. The shield final was won by Morgan McNamee’s Team D who got the better of Eoin Doogan’s Team B in a tight competitive match. Team B were unfortunately deprived of their captain Eoin through illness. The cup final was won by Finn Coady’s Team C in another exciting game with Michael Keown’s Team A never giving up right to the final whistle. We had all weather conditions, and at times it made the 1939 Thunder and Lightning Final look like a walk in the park, but that didn’t stop our young players from giving it their all. Many thanks to Ballyshannon Shoe Company for sponsoring the medals and trophies and to Gus Culkin for making presentations in the Aras afterwards. Thanks to Val Murray for reffing the finals. Special thanks to all the parents / guardians who laid on the much welcome tea and refreshments in the Aras afterwards. This was a great league with 44 players taking part over the five weeks.
The Bord na nÓg AGM takes place on Wednesday, 23rd November at 8pm in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh. We will be reflecting on a packed 2016 and planning for 2017. Underage football has been making great strides in the club and it is great to part of a project that is really going places. Fresh energy and ideas are always welcome though and anyone who has an interest in underage football in Ballyshannon is more than welcome to attend. There will be a short meeting before the AGM at 7pm to discuss the running of the presentation evening.
Ladies
The Ladies AGM took place in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh on Saturday evening. The meeting being quorate, detailed team reports were read. These may be obtained by members from the Ladies Secretary at wsargyll@gmail.com. This was followed by election of officers. Eoin O’Moore, as he had previously indicated, declined to stand for re-election as Chairperson. Having carried out these duties for several years, he felt that it was time that someone else assume the responsibility to carry forward Ladies Football in Aodh Ruadh. He indicated his willingness to assist his successor if called upon. He was thanked for all his work on behalf of Aodh Ruadh Ladies. Patricia McShea-Hill accepted re-election to the post of vice-chairperson and was duly appointed. Other appointments made were as follows: Secretary: Willie Scott; Fund-raising: Teddy Kane; PRO: John Hughes; Child Protection Officer: John Travers; County Reps: Willie Scott, Teddy Kane, Sara Gallagher (players representative); Lotto Organisation: Siobhan McGarrigle; LGFA Registration: Linda Clyne, Siobhan McGarrigle and Eoin O’Moore. The AGM was then adjourned until early January 2017 with a date to be notified in due course. Given that so many of our players are at underage grades the secretary is reminding parents that, like all sports organisations, we depend on parents being active in helping to organise and urged a big attendance at the reconvened AGM where we will be appointing a chairperson.
Hurling
Juvenile Hurling AGM will take place on Tuesday 29th November at 8pm. It will be a review of 2016 and a look forward to 2017. All interested in underage hurling are asked to attend. At the moment we are fielding six underage teams. There is a lot of work involved for the small, hard-working committee and we would encourage some new blood to get involved. Nobody needs to be afraid of being forced to take a job. Come along on the night and hear how the underage hurling season went in 2016. You never know you, might want to get involved. As the saying goes, many hands make light work. Anyone who can’t make the meeting, but feels like getting involved is asked to contact John Rooney 086-2587793.
Our annual Christmas quiz will take place in Owen Roe’s on Thursday 15th December. Always a good night of fun and craic.
Scór na nÓg
There was a large crowd in attendance in the Saint John Bosco Centre in Donegal town on Friday night for the last of the Scór na nÓg semi-finals and Aodh Ruadh were well represented on the night.
Our young quiz team of Beth Flood, Laoise Kelly, Clodagh O’Connor and Lauren McHugh were up against eight other clubs with only the top two qualifying for the Tráth na gCesiteanna final. While some of the questions were quite tough, never the less, our girls put up a brave performance, but failed to break into the top two. Hopefully this young quiz team will come back stronger next year. Many thanks to their teacher Eamon Martin Maguire for all his help with the girls’ preparation.
Next up was our instrumental music group of Elyssa Finnegan, Fódhla Sheerin, Eoin Summerville, Sean Branley and Daithí Sheerin. Despite a great performance of their two tunes, Tripping up the Stairs and Merry Blacksmith, and a glowing report from the adjudicator, they failed to qualify for the Ceol Uirlise finals. This is a young group of talented musicians and hopefully we will see them winning county finals in the very near future. They were well coached for the night by Seamus Sweeney.
Our final competitor Amy Carney was taking part in the Aithriseoireacht / Scéalaíocht – Recitation / Storytelling competition. She chose to recite the William Allingham poem, Abbey Assaroe. A confident performance on the stage, saw another glowing report from the adjudicator and qualification for the county final. Many thanks to her teacher Áine Roper who had Amy well prepared for the night. We wish Amy all the best for the county final which will be held in Glenfin on a date yet to be decided.
Finally many thanks to all the parents and friends who drove all our competitors to Donegal town on what was a very poor night weather wise. Also thanks to all our supporters who also made the journey.
