Retailer Declan Irwin shows no signs of stopping after completing the largest marathon in the world.
Declan, of Irwin Expert Electrical, was inspired to take part in The New York City Marathon when he discovered one of his suppliers “Fitbit”, was the first-ever official fitness tracker partner of this year’s race. He successfully completed the race on November 6th in New York.
Declan started training for his first marathon just over two years ago and has since gained a love for all things to do with keeping fit. Declan can regularly be spotted running from Letterkenny to his home in Buncrana after a day’s work at Irwin Expert Electrical’s showroom in Letterkenny.
This is his third marathon this year, which also included the Derry and Dublin marathons. All in the last 12 months he has walked The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James), nearly 125 miles and has climbed Beenkeragh Ridge and down Carrauntoohil.
“Running two busy electrical and home appliance showrooms can be stressful, and running and taking part in healthy activities like training for marathons gives me a release from work, helps me concentrate and think of new and innovative ways to promote and introduce new fitness watches, activity trackers and a range of healthy cooking appliances such as steam ovens, air fryers and nutribullets of to our showrooms, and it seems to be a winning combination. I am planning my next trip now and hope to take part in the Amsterdam Marathon next”, says Declan.
The New York City Marathon is the premier event of New York Road Runners and the largest marathon in the world. Held annually on the first Sunday of November, the race features 50,000 runners including the world’s top professional athletes and a vast range of competitive, recreational, and charity runners.
Participants from more than 125 countries tour the city, starting on Staten Island at the foot of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and running through the neighborhoods of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx before ending in Manhattan.
More than one million spectators and thousands of volunteers line the city streets in support of the runners. The race is part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, which features the world’s top marathons—Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York—and crowns the top professional male and female marathoners each year.
