The club note with sadness the tragic passing of Martin Williamson recently in the United States. Martin played on the 1980 All-Ireland winning De La Salle team. He also played county minor football for Donegal as well as lining out with Aodh Ruadh. A memorial service will be held when his ashes return home at some point in the New Year. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
Football
The Ulster championship and league winning county minors are being honoured at a function this Friday night at the Villa Rose Hotel in Ballybofey where Donegal County Board will host a presentation night for the squad. Tickets for Friday’s event are priced at €25 and available to order from the club or through the County Administrator, Noreen Doherty, at administrator.donegal@gaa.ie.
There was a big crowd present at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Sunday for the closing stages of the 2016 Bakery Cup. The semi-finals saw some great football being played. Eugene Doherty’s team got the better of Shane Brady’s side on the bottom pitch, while on the top pitch Mark McGlynn’s side prevailed against Senan Rooney’s men. The final saw Eugene Doherty’s side delivering an excellent team performance to take victory against Mark McGlynn’s outfit and claim the Bakery Cup, one of the oldest underage trophies in the country. There was a great spread upstairs in the Aras afterwards where presentations were made and some of the competition’s long history relived. We have a great gallery of pictures from the Bakery Cup up on aodhruadh.org.
The fourth week of play in the under 10 Ballyshannon Shoe Company winter league took place last Friday and, after two great games of football, the finals pairings were decided. In the Plate final Team B captained by Eoin Doogan will play Team D captained by Morgan McNamee. That game will throw in at 6.15pm. Players should be up at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh for 6pm. The Cup Final sees Team A captained by Michael Keown play Team C captained by Finn Coady. That game throws in at 7pm, with players to be up at 6.45pm. We will have presentations up in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh afterwards so parents / guardians are asked to help by supplying refreshments and behind the hatch in the Aras. Remember, all players are to bring €1 to cover the cost of the lights.
Advance notice of the Bord na nÓg AGM which will take place on Wednesday, 23rd November at 8pm in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh.
Ladies
The Ladies AGM takes place this Saturday 19th November at 6pm in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh. We will be looking back over the year just past and making plans for 2017. All with an interest in Ladies football in Ballyshannon are invited to attend.
Hurling
The senior hurlers are staging their table quiz in Owen Roe’s this Thursday November 17th. A good night of craic guaranteed.
Juvenile Hurling AGM will take place on Tuesday 29th November at 8pm. It will be a review of 2016 and a look forward to 2017. All interested in underage hurling are asked to attend. At the moment we are fielding six underage teams. There is a lot of work involved for the small, hard-working committee and we would encourage some new blood to get involved. Nobody needs to be afraid of being forced to take a job. Come along on the night and hear how the underage hurling season went in 2016. You never know you, might want to get involved. As the saying goes, many hands make light work. Anyone who can’t make the meeting, but feels like getting involved is asked to contact John Rooney 086-2587793.
Our annual Christmas quiz will take place in Owen Roe’s on Thursday 15th December. Always a good night of fun and craic.
Scór na nÓg
Best of luck to all club members taking part in the county semi-final of Scór na nÓg this Friday in the St John Bosco Centre in Donegal town. Competiton starts at 7.30pm. Amy Carney will be taking part in the Aithriseoireacht / Scéalaíocht section under the guidance of her teacher Áine Roper. Beth Flood, Laoise Kelly, Clodagh O’Connor and Lauren McHugh are joining forces for the Tráth na gCesiteanna and have been well coached by Eamon Martin Maguire. Our Ceol Uirlise group will also be taking part led by Seamus Sweeney. They include Fódhla Sheerin, Daithí Sheerin, Eoin Summerville, Sean Branley and Elyssa Finnegan.
