A website has been set up to remember the crew lost on the Carraig Una on the fortieth anniversary of the tragedy.

The tragic crew perished when their trawler foundered at sea at Rathlin O’Beirne Island on the 23rd of November 1976.

The Carraig Úna crew were Ted Carbery, John Boyle, Anthony McLaughlin, Michael Coyle, and Doalty O’Donnell.

The website, which was set up by one of the children of the crewmen, contains photographs of the crew, the boat, and newspaper clippings from the time of the tragedy.

Two videos are also on the website; ‘Lost at Sea’, an award-winning RTÉ documentary which documents the search effort, and ‘Disasters’ (2007), also from RTÉ.

After the Evelyn Marie tragedy just twenty one months earlier, when news of the Carraig Una disaster came in the search effort for the crew was huge and immediate.

The Irish Air Corps, Army, Navy, Gardaí, Lifeboat crews, two helicopters from Finner Camp, over 30 trawlers from ports across Donegal, and local volunteers all joined forces in an attempt to recover the crew.

Despite the massive search effort, only two bodies were recovered. Ted Carberry was discovered by a diver on the first day of the search, however John Boyle wasn’t discovered until almost six weeks after the tragedy.

Unfortunately for the families and friends of Doalty O’Donnell, Michael Coyle and Anthony McLaughlin, their bodies were never recovered.

Anniversary masses are to be held in Burtonport, Killybegs and Kincasslagh to remember the crew on the fortieth anniversary of the tragedy.

The Carraig Una Crew 40th Anniversary Masses are as follows:
Sat 19th November 6pm St Columba’s Church, Acres, Burtonport
Sun 20th November 11am St Mary’s Church, Killybegs
Wed 23rd November 7pm St Mary’s Church, Kincasslagh

If you would like to contribute to the website or share any memories, images or anything related to the crew, please email info@carraiguna.org
