Hard luck to our U13 girls team who lost out to Glenswilly on a score line of 2-02 to 1-03 in the county final today. The girls dominated the game for long spells but didnt take advantage of their chances in front of goal. Some great performances on the day from Áine Byrne, Áine Ward, Lilly Doherty, Sarah Canny, and Zofia Mazri.
Four Masters 3-11
St Eunans 2-04
A performance built on sound goalkeeping, teak tough defence, powerful midfield and efficient score taking resulted in Four Masters taking the county U13A title back through the gap on Sunday 6th November. These young men will now go forward to the All-Ireland feile next year and represent their county as worthy champions.
A management team of John Sinclair, Kevin Sinclair and Mickey Martin, all former St Joseph’s Avenue residents have moulded a group of young men who play an attractive brand of football, that the most famous St Joseph’s resident of all, the great Patsy Brogan would be extremely proud of. Whilst this was an excellent all round team performance, the stand out player on the pitch was corner back Liam McLaughlin, who served up one of the best defensive displays seen in a county final at any level during 2016.
Four Masters were out of the blocks quicker here with a Dermot Slevin point, followed by a thunderbolt goal from Jamie Gorrell. The impressive Josh McCullagh responded with two points for the Cathedral town lads but Frank Cornyn and Ultan O’Grady pushed Four Masters further in front with two points. The lively Slevin was at it again, tormenting the Eunans defence and slotted in a well taken goal which contributed to an overall personal tally of 2-03 for the day.
Eunans were struggling but rallied in the second quarter with two points from Sean McVeigh and a crucial goal by Peadar McGeehan, to bring themselves back into contention with a halftime score of 2.5 to 1.4.
Four Masters had the breeze in the second half and would have been expected to push on, with Ultan O’Grady duly obliging with the opening score of the half.
Eunans had other ideas though and Sean McVeigh netted a powerful shot to beat Oisin McCallig and bring the game back to two. Eunans effectively owned the third quarter and Four Masters struggled to get up the pitch but some steady goalkeeping by Oisin McCallig, and stand out defence from Liam McLaughlin, Calum Stewart, Andrew Monaghan, Josh McCrea, Lee Murchin and Diaramuid O’Donnell held the Eunans boys to that solitary score for the entire second half.
If Eunans owned the third quarter, Four Masters used the final quarter to carve their name onto the trophy. When badly needing a score, Senan Quinn, Jamie Gorrell and Frank Cornyn combined to carve out a free for the stylish Mark Jordan to point. This was a crucial free to bring the lead back to three points, and young Jordan seemed to have nerves of steel to split the posts. He pointed again soon after to swing the momentum in favour of the boys in blue and would finish the day with a personal tally of three.
Frank Cornyn and Evan Gallagher had huge final quarters and following Mark Jordan’s example, Evan Gallagher scored two points in a five minute spell, either side of another from Dermot Slevin. Strangely, after all the St Eunans pressure in the third quarter, Four Masters now found themselves 2-11 to 2-04 up going into the final five minutes. As the rain began to fall in Convoy, Ultan O’Grady set off on another one of his runs from deep and slipped the ball to Dermot Slevin who slotted below Ronan Coady for a goal in the 48th minute.
Three minutes of injury time were played and St Eunans pushed hard for a goal, but again were met by strong resistance from Four Masters, with Liam McLaughlin breaking their hearts on numerous occasions, whilst Calum Stewart and Andrew Monaghan continued to sweep up any loose ball. The leadership of captain Lee Murchin assisted by his half backs of Josh McCrea and Diarmuid O’Donnaill all steadied the ship, with Ultan O’Grady, Senan Quinn and Jamie Gorrell constantly providing an outlet to carry the ball from deep.
In front of the large travelling support, Four Masters team captain Lee Murchin accepted the cup, and in a speech that wouldn’t go amiss on the steps of the Hogan Stand, thanked his fellow players, team management and the St Eunans team for an excellent sporting game. To go through a season unbeaten is a special achievement, and all readers should take note of the names below, as Four Masters supporters will be hearing more from this group in years to come.
