All second-level schools across Donegal will open tomorrow after the secondary teachers union, the ASTI called off its action to allow for talks in the Workplace Relations Commission.
The union is suspending its one day strikes and its withdrawal from supervision and substitution.
It follows the closure of many schools across the county yesterday and today.
Education Minister Richard Bruton welcomed the move, which emerged after a meeting of the ASTI 23-member Standing Committee.
School mangers are working tonight to spread the word and ensure that schools open tomorrow as normal.
Most schools across Donegal will be informing parents by text.
In a statement tonight the Department of Education confirmed that it has received an invitation from Anna Perry, Chair of the Teachers Conciliation Council (TCC) and Director of Conciliation Services, Workplace Relations Commission, to meet with her tomorrow to discuss matters of mutual concern relating to the ASTI’s industrial action that fall within the remit of the TCC.
The Department has accepted this invitation.
Mr Bruton said that he welcomed this initiative and the decision of the ASTI to suspend their one day strikes and their withdrawal from Supervision and Substitution duties.
The ASTI said tonight that it was accepting the invitation, issued earlier today by Ms Perry to enter talks to explore possibilities to end the current industrial relations disputes.
The ASTI Standing Committee has accepted this invitation.
The ASTI has agreed to defer its directive on supervision and substitution and its strike action to facilitate this process for the duration of the talks.
“It is expected that this process will continue until the end of November. ASTI members will be available for teaching and supervision and substitution duties tomorrow and for the duration of the talks. We expect that all second-level schools will be open tomorrow, “ASTI said.
