Talks have resumed this afternoon between the The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) and the Department of Education over the issue of payment for recently qualified teachers.
This follows four hours of negotiations yesterday afternoon, and several meetings over the past two weeks.
The Department told the ASTI that payments would be made immediately if they agree to sign the Lansdowne Road Agreement.
The Department of Education say that the ASTI’s withdrawal from supervisory and substitution duties is directly linked to their refusal to work the Croke Park hours (less than one hour a week). However, every other civil servant work those hours.
Widespread closures of over half of Ireland’s secondary schools is to be expected tomorrow as 17,500 teachers withdraw from their supervisory duties. Some 200,000 students will be affected.
In addition to withdrawing from supervisory and substitution duties, the ASTI have organised six strike days over the next month.
Strike days are as follows;
Tuesday, November 8th
Wednesday, November 16th
Thursday, November 24th
Tuesday, November 29th
Tuesday, December 6th
Wednesday, December 7th
