New road could be named after Donegal Nobel Prize winner

Independent Cllr Michael McBride is to propose that the newly opened Unifi Link Road in Letterkenny be named after William C. Campbell, the Nobel Prize winner.

Cllr McBride is to make the formal proposal at next Tuesday’s Municipal District meeting in Milford.

He has received representations from people in Letterkenny who say it would be appropriate for Professor Campbell’s historic achievement to be recognised in close proximity to the major international companies on the Business Park Road.

The Ramelton Professor was recently honoured with a Civic Reception by the Council.

He received the Nobel Prize for Medicine after discovering a class of drugs called Avermectins, whose derivatives have been shown to have “extraordinary efficacy” in treating River Blindness and Lymphatic filariasis, among other parasitic diseases affecting animals and humans.

Bill Campbell was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2015 along with Satoshi Omura of Japan and Tu Youyou of China for their discoveries that have revolutionised the treatment of some of the most devastating parasitic diseases.

He was born in 1930 in Ramelton, the third son of R. J. Campbell, a farm supplier.
