Just one Garda station will be open to serve the whole of Donegal tomorrow as rank-and-file garda officers look set to go ahead with their planned strike.
The Letterkenny Garda Station will be open on a 24-hour basis for emergency purposes only. Only 78 the 564 Garda stations will open around Ireland.
It has also emerged tonight that middle-ranking gardai have called off their planned strike tomorrow morning.
More than 2,000 sergeants and inspectors represented by the AGSI have been ordered to report for duty as normal.
However, the majority of the 10,500 rank-and-file garda officers in the GRA are still planning to go ahead with their industrial action. They will stage a 24-hour walkout from 7am tomorrow, and only a select 18 emergency response and regional support units will be in operation.
The news comes as a deal was put forward by the Labour Court in a bid to resolve the current pay dispute. Members of the Garda Representative Association put the recommendations to ballot and are putting them under consideration tonight. Since no decision has yet been made on whether the proposed increase in pay is sufficient with their requests, the GRA strike will continue.
Gardai will operate a ‘skeletal service’ tomorrow in an effort to provide security to the public. The 999 service will be available for emergency calls only.
Calls for emergency services will be prioritised to deal with issues of immediate and serious risk. The public have been asked to only ring 999 in an emergency and to not phone or call to Garda stations unless there is an emergency.
