A county councillor has appealed to young women to take all necessary personal safety measures following an attack on a woman in Letterkenny.
Cllr Gerry McMonagle was speaking after the woman in her 20s suffered a serious sexual assault after a man broke into her apartment last weekend.
Gardai have launched an investigation into the attack and carried out a full forensic examination of the scene which is located close to Letterkenny’s town centre.
Cllr McMonagle said “This is obviously a hugely serious issue and I would urge young women to take all the necessary precautions for their safety.
“Obviously the full facts of this case are not known as Gardai have their own operational matters which they must undertake.
“But the fact remains that a woman was attacked in her own home and that is a hugely seriously issue.
“There are women in their beds and should they be frightened tonight? Of course, they should and they should take the necessary precautions after what has happened.
“This is a very serious incident and to think that someone attacked a young woman in her bed in the apparent safety of her own home of horrific.
“This person needs to be caught and interviewed by Gardai and anyone
who knows anything should contact the Gardai immediately,” he said.
The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning last
between 4 and 5am on October 23rd.
Gardai are remaining tight-lipped about the attack.
However, they have confirmed they preserved the scene of the attack
and examined it and state that their investigation is ongoing.
They have also been trawling through hours of CCTV footage in a bid to
identify possible suspects who were in the area at the time.
All CCTV footage in arterial roads leading to the apartment block are
also being examined.
Checkpoints were also set up last Saturday night in the area of the
attack in a bid to jog people’s memories who may have witnessed the
attacker hanging around the area.
Anybody with any information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda
station on 0749167100.
