FOOTBALL: Finn Harps have secured their Premier Division status for next season after Cork City hammered Wexford Youths 5-0 at Turner’s Cross this evening.
An early brace from Chiedozie Ogbene set John Caulfield’s side on their way to an easy win, and added further goals through Sean Maguire and Conor McCarthy before half-time.
It got even worse for Wexford after the interval with Cork notching another goal through Gavan Holohan to make it 5-0 and cap a miserable evening for Shane Keegan’s side.
Harps fans were celebrating on social media at half-time – with Cork four to the good up.
Harps nut Rodney Dullaghan hilariously posted on his Facebook timeline, “Even though they shot Michael Collins, Roy Keane walked out on our country at the World Cup and Sonia O’Sullivan sh** herself at the Olympics….I will from now on, always have a soft spot for the great people of Cork. #WeAreStayingUp#UTH
Harps were six points ahead of Wexford prior to tonight’s clash on Leeside – after earning a massive point away to Wexford on Friday night.
That crucial point, meant Wexford had to go to Cork and win to have any hopes of catching Harps on the final day of the season.
That never materialized, and ensured Harps fans didn’t have to endure a nervy night following Livescore!
Despite going ten games without a win, Harps did enough to ensure their status with a big home win against Bray a fortnight ago.
They made a superb start to the season, and in truth it was that strong start that ultimately means the mighty Harps will once again play in the Premier Division next season.
Some players will be heading towards the exit door in the off season, while the great Kevin McHugh will bid farewell against Bohemians on Friday night.
However, now is not the time to think about next season, it’s time to savour in the magnificent achievement by Harps in consolidating their status.
Get the champagne open Ollie!! Surely he’ll enjoy a few well deserved drinks tonight? Although Bohemians are a ‘serious side’.
Well done to all Ollie all his staff and the entire squad on ensuring Donegal will have senior football on its doorstep again next year. #UTH
