Crowds urged to attend public meeting over future of Dunlewey Post Office

POLITICS: Sinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Deputy Pearse Doherty has today (Monday) urged people to come along in large numbers to attend tonight’s public meeting which is to be held at 7pm in the Ionad Pobail in Dunlewey to discuss the future of the village’s Post Office.

The meeting, which has been organised by Sinn Féin’s Cllr John Sheamais Ó Fearraigh and Deputy Doherty, has been called in response to the announcement by An Post last week that it has decided to place the contract for the branch out to Public Consultation.

Deputy Doherty told Donegal Daily, “Immediately following the announcement from An Post last Friday that the contract for the Dunlewey Post Office branch is to be put out for Public Consultation, Cllr Ó Fearraigh and I decided to call a public meeting in order to allow the community to come together and decide on a co-ordinate community response to this decision.

“The meeting, which will take place at 7pm tonight in the Ionad Pobail in Dunlewey, is open to everyone and it’s hoped that as many people as possible come along to have their say and to take the opportunity to air their thoughts on how collectively the local community can go forward in an effort to save this vital service.

“The Post Office in Dunlewey has been at the centre of village life for generations and the current Post Mistress, who is set to step down in the coming weeks, has given over twenty years of service to the community and her hard work and dedication is very much recognised and respected by the people of Dunlewey.

“Of course, the closure of a rural Post Office can have a devastating impact on the community and on local businesses and it is of course vital that every effort is made to ensure that this service is retained in Dunlewey well into the future.”

“I would therefore like to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to attend tonight’s public meeting where I look forward to hearing from the community and listening to their views as to how together we can work together to try and save this important local service.”
