The new Unifi Link Road in Letterkenny was officially opened today.
The road was conceived and designed to open up the land at the former Unifi plant following its demolition, and to provide an improved and safer route for motorists to access the N56 via the soon to be constructed roundabout.
The official opening was performed by Mayor of Letterkenny, Cllr James Pat McDaid.
The 345m road which links the mini roundabout on the Kiltoy Road and the mini-roundabout on the Lisnenan Road was partially constructed by the former owners of the Unifi site, and recently completed at a cost of €42,000 and taken in charge by the Letterkenny Municipal District.
Its opening will in the short to medium term provide an alternative route for Lisnenan traffic to avoid the roadworks on the N56 (Kiltoy) roundabout which are due to continue for an approx 20 weeks. Its long term benefit will be realised in conjunction with the opening of the new N56 roundabout at Ballyraine.
This is the first new road to be opened in Letterkenny for a number of years.
The Mayor of the Letterkenny Municipal District Cllr James Pat McDaid has welcomed the opening.
Mayor McDaid says it is part of the bigger plan for improved traffic movement with a new 1.85 million euro roundabout going to construction at Kiltoy. It is scheduled to open next March.
“Traffic coming from Woodlands and the Mountain Top can now use the new Unifi Link Road coming out at Kiltoy and head for Ramelton, into town or out the Port Road. It means motorists can avoid the busy junction just in front of the Church of the Irish Martyrs” Mayor McDaid said.
The opening of the new link road will also be beneficial for the traffic going to the new Educate Together School which is to built on a site along the route.
