Outrage as heavily pregnant woman’s car seized by customs officers

There has been severe criticism of the custom’s unit in Donegal after a heavily pregnant woman’s car was seized.

The woman, who was eight months pregnant, claimed she was driving a courtesy car as her own car was being repaired.

The incident happened on the N13 road close to Newtowncunningham as custom’s officers were operating routine checkpoint.

The woman claimed she had been driving the northern-registered vehicle for just a few days while her own state-registered car was in for repair.

Anti-VRT campaigner Ryan Stewart told the Inishowen Independent that customs officials were completely “over the top” in their actions towards the woman.

“This woman is heavily pregnant and was driving courtesy car because her own car, which is southern-registered, is in the garage getting fixed.

“The garage man gave her a lend of a Northern-registered car, which she had for less than fourteen days when it was lifted.

“It was totally over the top for customs to act like this,” he said.

When contacted, a spokesperson for the Revenue office, said they were repented from speaking about individual cases.

A video of the incident, which was filmed by another member of the public, has gone viral and has been viewed more than 125,000 times.
