There will be a Bord na nÓg meeting on Wednesday 19th October at 8.30pm to consider the underage structure and management for the 2017 season. We are going well at underage level, but we value and need the input of fresh thinking and energy. If you would like to get involved in any way, shape or form we would love to see you on Wednesday 19th October. We will also be making plans for our end of year presentation evening at this meeting. Underage managers are reminded to return their reports for the season to Lisa McTernan at their earliest convenience ahead of the Bord na nÓg AGM.
Hurling
Underage hurling in Aodh Ruadh has enjoyed some great victories over the years and last Thursdays claiming of the Division 2 under 16 Championship was up there with the best of them. This young team overcame a lot of setback’s this year due to a number of bad injuries to players in what was already a small squad. 16 players was our total panel this season, due to injuries, work and suspension we only had the 16 lads available to us for one game this year. The lads worked extremely hard all season and showed a never say die attitude which was a credit to them and something we’re all very proud off. The final took place in the Centre of Excellence in Convoy and we were up against a physically much stronger Letterkenny Gaels team. We only had 14 players available on the night. We were delighted to welcome back our captain Pauric Keenaghan from a bad injury, but unfortunately injury ruled out Liam O’Sullivan and Nathan Owens-Kelly. Understandably the lads showed a lot of nerves early in the game and found it hard to get into their rhythm and play the hurling we all know they were capable of. Despite leading at half-time 0-11 to 1-1, management and the lads themselves were not happy with the first-half performance. They really upped their game in the second half and were dominant throughout. The result was never in any doubt and they ran out comfortable winners 2-17 to 3-2. The team, management and supporters were delighted at the full-time whistle. All close to the squad knew how important this win was to the lads and how much effort the boys had put in. It was great to see Pauric Keenaghan accepting the Pat Butler Cup from Donegal Hurling Board Chairman Jason Ewing. From Convoy it was back to Ballyshannon for a victorious tour of the town. Aodh Ruadh Juvenile Hurling Committee donated this cup to Donegal Hurling Board in 2014 to honour the memory of the late Pat Butler, a tireless worker for underage hurling in Aodh Ruadh and throughout Donegal. It was a proud moment for all involved with this team to bring the cup back to Father Tierney Park for the first time. Many thanks to all the parents who gave us great support all year and drove the lads all over the county to games. Underage hurling is now finished for 2016, but players in all age groups are encouraged to use the hurling wall to practise their skills throughout the winter months.
Ladies
Congratulations to Realt Ruadh senior ladies representing Aodh Ruadh and Realt na Mara who won Division 2 on Sunday and who will play their football in Division 1 in 2017.
We still await a fixture for the under 16’s division 2 county semi-final against Urris. We will post details on the Aodh Ruadh CLG Facebook page as soon as we have them.
The under 13 girls had an almighty battle with Termon in the county quarter-final on Saturday afternoon, but after some 90 minutes of football the sides simply couldn’t be separated. It was a enthralling game with fortunes tilting one way and then the other. Either side could easily have won, but they will have to meet again to decide who will meet Killybegs in the semi-final. Aodh Ruadh settled the quickest with Emer O’Brien, Katie O’Brien and Katie McMullin registering early points before Katie O’Brien drilled home the game’s first goal. Aoibheann McGarrigle also split the posts as Aodh Ruadh went in at half-time leading 1-6 to 1-4. However, the Ernesiders’ accuracy dropped dramatically in the second half, while Termon radically improved the quality of their shooting. Sarah Jane Keon got an early point, but Termon forged into a four point lead midway through the second half and some among the home support seemed to think it was a case of job done. That was a misjudgement of the character in this Aodh Ruadh team and the girls duly rose to the challenge. Caitlin McGarrigle was coolness itself as she dispatched a quality penalty. Then the Shamettes got a rousing fillip when the inspirational Tia McFarland went on a driving run through the home midfield and defence before blasting an unstoppable shot past their net minder to take Aodh Ruadh back into the lead. Termon managed to goal themselves to reclaim the lead, but once again the visitors responded in style, this time it was Lauren McHugh who came up with the goods, slipping home from close range. That could have been the winner, but Termon again managed to bring the game back level at 4-7 apiece with seconds left on the clock. Both sides were shattered after a titanic 70 plus minutes of football, but they didn’t stint any effort in extra time with the large and vocal crowd present now augmented by senior Termon footballers, taken in by the great game of football being served up. Again it was Aodh Ruadh who took the initiative. Aoibheann McGarrigle had a good point and was incredibly unlucky to see a rocket of a shot come back off the crossbar. At half time in extra time Aodh Ruadh lead 4-10 to 4-8. The second half of extra-time saw Ballyshannon unable to add to their tally and, despite some heroic defending, Termon managed to get the scores to leave the game finishing level after an thrilling display of top quality football. Aodh Ruadh will be disappointed not to have come away with the win in normal and extra time, but will have plenty of confidence ahead of the replay. Aine Hill was outstanding between the sticks, making some brilliant saves, but, just as importantly, using her kick outs well to relieve pressure. Grainne Maguire and Ella Clancy were magnificent in a defence where the exchanges were unforgiving. Tia McFarland really answered the call and gave an exhibition at midfield where penalty hero Caitlin McGarrigle also worked herself to the bone. Katie O’Brien had a good game up front with 1-4 to her credit in the first half alone. Emer O’Brien was a real tiger and took the best Termon could throw at her and repaid it in the finest fashion possible. Katie McMullin, Aoibheann McGarrigle and Sarah Jane Patton all gave it everything they had. We await details of the replay fixture and will post them on the Aodh Ruadh CLG Facebook page as soon as we have them.
