The footballers of Burt have created history after being crowned Intermediate champions after an epic struggle with Milford at O’Donnell Park in Letterkenny today.
Burt had the advantage going in at the break and led by a goal on a scoreline of 1-05 to 0-5 but Danny O’Donnell’s side battled back and levelled the scores at 1-6 thanks in part to a Pauric Curley goal
Milford managed to get their noses in front and it looked as if they could add to their division two crown as they led 1-11 to 1-8 with the final whistle about to go.
But Burt were thrown a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty – and Conor Harkin, who scored their opening goal, dispatched form the spot to tie the game at 2-8 to 1-11.
It was the Inishowen men who surged into an injury time lead and eventually claimed victory on a scoreline of 2-11 to 1-12.
Burt were overjoyed at the final whistle but fans would have to have sympathy for Milford after such a gallant display.
There won’t be much time, if any at all, for Burt to celebrate as they play Bredagh of Co Down in the Ulster Intermediate Club Championship tomorrow – as this game was a replay.
